How to pay abroad without hidden fees or surprises: our advice by destination.
The CFA franc is only used in the WAEMU and CEMAC zones. As soon as you leave them, you need a payment plan. Here is the right mix.
Your bank card, your best ally
- Visa and Mastercard cards from Ivorian banks work in most countries
- Tell your bank before leaving and check your limits
- Ask about fees for payments and withdrawals abroad
- Always pay in local currency when the terminal offers conversion
Cash, for arrival and small purchases
Bring 2 or 3 days’ worth of spending in euros or dollars, easy to exchange anywhere. Avoid exchanging at the airport, where rates are worse.

What about mobile money?
Very handy at home and in the region, it is rarely accepted outside West Africa. Use it to top up your card or receive a transfer from family in an emergency.
In short
- One main card + one backup card
- Some foreign cash for arrival
- Pay in local currency
- An emergency plan (transfer, reachable relative)
