Baggage: the rules to know before you fly

28 September 2026 6 min read

Allowance, weight, liquids, prohibited items and lost luggage: the cheat sheet to avoid surprises at check-in.

Each airline has its own rules, varying by class and destination. Your exact allowance is always shown on your e-ticket. Here are the key principles.

Cabin baggage

  • One cabin bag and often a small personal item (handbag, laptop)
  • Weight usually between 7 and 12 kg depending on the airline
  • Liquids: 100 ml containers maximum, in a sealed one-litre clear bag
  • Power banks and e-cigarettes: cabin only, never in the hold
  • Medicines: keep the prescription with you

Checked baggage

  • Allowance expressed in number of pieces (often 2 × 23 kg to Europe in economy) or total weight
  • Above 32 kg per bag, luggage is refused for handlers’ safety
  • Extra baggage is almost always cheaper when added in advance

Prohibited items

Sharp objects in the cabin, flammable products, gas canisters, and some foods depending on the destination country (meat, dairy, seeds). Check before packing local products.

Lost or damaged luggage

  1. Do not leave the airport: go to the airline’s baggage desk
  2. Fill in a report (PIR) and keep the file number
  3. Keep receipts for essential purchases
  4. Send your written claim in time (7 days for damage, 21 days for a delay)
